You've got mail

I'll take time to answer mails and look at comments and troll-spam the fans forum.
I also must try Grand Rogue Auto.

"ROGUE SURVIVOR?"
For various reasons, RS is in neutral gear since January. That's bad news I know.
The time that was spent on RS is now spent on learning Flash, because I need the skill.

"FLASH?"
I'm writing various game prototypes while learning. Prototyping with Flash is really easy and fun. I strongly dislike writing UI code and Flash makes it very easy to implement an interface and go straight to game mechanics and AI. Some real games might come out of it. Simpler than RS but with original and interesting gameplay and very unlike your average Flash game. I think I'll make a blog about them.

"OK. BUT ROGUE SURVIVOR?"
I'll try to come back at it later. Hopefully it is not dead, but you shouldn't expect frequent releases as before.
Letting this game die would be a shame, wouldn't it?

Ok. Time to check the mails.

End of post.

  2. Terrible news. Rogue Survivor is an amazing game with tons of potential that hopefully won't fade into obscurity.

I understand your own needs/wants to grow though, so good luck.

Would you be interested in releasing the code for fan mods?

  3. ROGUE SURVIVOR WHEN?

  4. I'll release the source code when the game will be certified dead.

  5. OK. BUT ROGUE SURVIVOR?

  6. RS is a game I happily shelve mainstream hits to play. Come back to it or else :0

  7. Flash, or the best way to unlearn coding skills. Why, on earth, someone would want to do that (Shame on you ^^)? Anyway, good luck in your new projects.

This said, you're not the only one to have slowed down during jan/feb. I'm behind schedule too now.

  8. Tsk, Flash - we want more RS! :)

  9. Flash is fine. Take a look at AS3, its not that much different from Java/C# for writing game logic and you can easily integrate assets from CS5.

  10. They all say that before doing pong and mario clones until the end of their life :p

Sorry, I have a few friends who do a lot of flash and it gave me the bad habit of trying to troll them out of it. So, don't bother giving me a detailed answer about the pro and cons of flash, I'm fine ignoring any valid argument in its favor. ;)

  11. Awwww, but but there is so much awesome in Rogue Survivor, sigh. I've been waiting for an update ever since the last one, its such a good game.

  12. If you don't make flash games that are at least as good as Rogue Survivor at least one anonymous person on the internet will never forgive you ;)

This update came out on my birthday. Not the best gift...

  14. Couldn't you bring out some sort of Editor for RS at least? So we can add new items, weapons, armor and furniture and so on?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Oh, sad to hear that. We have quite a fanbase here in Russia, and I would gladly mod it to death...

I really hope that you will do something about RS :).

  16. Don't worry fellow survivors. Its not the end for RS.
Either I come back at it again later.
Or I abandon the project and the game goes open source so people can improve it.
Thanks for showing interest in the game anyway.

  17. Any idea of some sort of timeframe for when you might either come back to Rogue Survivor or declare it as abandoned? I love the game but I don't want to be pining for an update for 6 months when I could just wait until I hear that you've started working on it again or you've released it. If it's going to be more like 2-3 months then I will pine away.

  18. I'd donate to you to work on RS!

  19. There are way too many flash games, Rs is unique and the only real zombie survival roguelike that implements what people truly want in a zombie apocalypse game, please don't give up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'd donate to you to continue working on Rogue Survivor too. RS has just as much appeal to me, and even more mass appeal, than Dwarf Fortress. If you keep working on it, get a bit more really solid content added, and then start spreading the word you could go the way of DF and start getting a pretty penny in monthly donations.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I've read somewhere he can't accept donations due to some French laws.

    ReplyDelete
  22. He could sell a 'premium version' with a "pay whatever you want" pricetag which has the extra feature of your character starting with a bag of groceries.

  23. WHAT ABOUT ROGUE SURVIVOR?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just chiming in to say that I too would be willing to donate towards development if that's an issue.

  25. Rogue survivor is the most badass roguelike ever, at least make it to 1.0 please

  26. Before you really settle on the decision of halting work on RS, I'd suggest you start a project on Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/) with a relatively modest target, 100 euros for example. Set up some of the reward things like donate 5< and get your first and last name added to the official name list (or any other suitable name of your choosing), 10< and get the previous reward plus early testing access to any new versions, 20< all of the previous rewards and you can contribute a content suggestion (new item, skill, feature etc) that will be seriously considered, 50< all previous rewards and something else really cool I can't think of.

I bet you'd be surprised how quickly you'd get 100 euros pledged, and you could do a new Kickstarter project for every major update.

  27. Hey Rj si tu arrete le devloppement pour de bon tu pourrait passer le flambeau a quelqun que tu connaiterait au pire mais serieux arrete pas le dev de Rs svp!!

  28. Sad news, indeed. I adore the game so much I was planning on doing a review & tutorial video for youtube. :(

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is indeed a real shame. The game's been getting a lot of buzz. I'd gladly donate too for what it's worth. Not sure you appreciate how much of a winner you've got here.

    ReplyDelete
  30. While it is a pity to have to wait, there is plenty of material out there to keep me occupied - I'm hoping you'll be ready to continue work on this just as I start to get tired of Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress. I would be especially grateful if you continued posting the occasional programming document, though, since I found them both entertaining and useful.

  31. You really aught to create a Kickstarter project so you can see how much of a great game you've got here. If the Kickstarter for porting 'Cthulhu Saves the World' to the PC can raise $6000 then Rogue Survivor will have no problem raising enough money for you to be able to continue working on it.

  32. B-B-B-but... but... but... ROGUE SURVIVOR!??!?!?! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *sobs uncontrollably*

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ok i'm pretty sure rj will add more to rogue survivor in time, the game already got the basic gameplay complete and enough to keep us busy for the wait i stay positive

  34. ROGUE SURVIVOR, NAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Err, according to some people on reddit and other websites, I am supposed to convince you to forget about flash (which is easy, you just have to open the editor while being sober) and continue to work on RS, even if the game is pretty solid in itself.

That's mainly because they don't know how bad i am at encouraging people (this said i'm very good at discouraging them from doing pretty much anything). Anyway, i feel compelled to do so: I'll just say "put a freaking paypal button on your website". It should do the trick.

[btw "Cthulhu saves the world" got 6K dollars?! This is totally insane! It's a freaking rpgmaker game i could fart in a week or two for God' sake]

  36. While you read this you suddenly feel the Urge, to Continue Making Rouge Survivor. You See a vision where the game is Complete and it work's flawlessly and you are proud to hear all the Fans (mostly hot chicks) praising your game while you roll around in your money and are glad you preferred to Continue Development of Rouge Survivor instead of learning some other silly programming language. Enjoy making Rouge Survivor even more Awsome! ;)

  37. Ok i searched the net like mad for a zombie survival roguelike and rogue survivor seems like the only one, zomband isn't as good and complex. Plz add a city editor at least if you don't plan to work on rogue survivor, so we can add new items and npcs and create new buildings

    ReplyDelete
  38. Open up a paypal for RS. Your desire to let it die will change really quick.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think i speak for anonymous people everywhere when i say: :(

  40. Bring back Rogue Survivor!

    I will give you money!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Best of luck. Hope to see a flash version of rogue survivor :)

  42. Guys send messages to people like house hold hacker suggesting this as a free game feature, in the past its been known to help games. Such as transfermice.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Really learning Flash just as html 5 is becoming a reality? I can't tell you how long I've been wanting Flash to die some horrible death.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks for the support and death threats :p

My personal situation requieres that I learn/improve my skills in Flash, PHP and stuff like that, all unrelated to RS.

Getting money from RS via donations, adverts or selling the game is a short term solution that is not viable and won't help me at all in the medium/long term.

    Thats for me.

As for the game, again remember it will not die. I can go back to work on it later or release it as open source.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Rouge if the game got more support /money. you could hire some programmer graphic designers or whatever to 1 teach you how to flash program and 2 make the game while you learn to program flash

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think Roguedjack's real problem is that there are so many people that spell his name with "Rouge" and not "Rogue". ;)

With that being said I support your endeavors!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Its funny, rouge means red in French.
Rouge Survivor could be a spinoff, you have to survive a commie chinese invasion.

I don't know why so many people mispell "roguelike" as "rougelike" though. Where does this comes from?

  48. American stupidity.

  49. PLEASE BRING MORE ROGUE SURVIVOR! I DON'T WANNA WASTE AWAY AT MY COMPUTER BEING BORED! MOAR ROGUE SURVIVOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
